MYP Champion Spotlight: Marrissa MacLeod, Baker Newman Noyes
Marrissa plays a key liaison role between the Manchester Young Professionals (MYP) and her place of employment, Baker Newman Noyes, to
champion community engagement and involvement in the MYP. The MYP Champion Spotlight series gives young professionals an inside look in what it is like to live, work & play in Manchester.
What does your typical 9-5 look like??
I typically start my day in the office (or at home, right now…COVID19) around 7 a.m. I prefer to go in early, so that I can leave earlier and enjoy more of the sunshine each day! My day is always different. I am either reviewing work that audit teams have been compiling, touching base with clients on the status of their audits, or problem solving with the audit partners. I also play a big role in training and recruiting within the firm. Some days I am prepping training materials or interviewing potential new hires.
What drew you in to work for Baker Newman Noyes?
I started at BNN right out of college and what drew me to them was their commitment to community service. They were constantly involved and always ready to do more. I knew that was where I wanted to be.
What is the best thing about working at Baker Newman Noyes?
That’s easy…the people! I also love that every day is different. The accounting industry is forever changing. I am always learning new things and overcoming new challenges.
What are some of the work perks that your employer offers?
We have a very generous vacation policy…the firm doesn’t skimp on that. We also have a cold brew coffee keg that’s free for all (& dangerous!)
What are you looking forward to accomplishing this year?
I am pretty excited about graduating from the Leadership Greater Manchester’s Class of 2020! Having the opportunity to be involved with this group of people has been amazing. I have learned so much about Manchester that I didn’t know before and I am so appreciative.
If you could give anyone looking to get into the accounting industry any tips, what would you tell them?
I would tell them to dive in! The accounting field is a super rewarding field to start a career. There’s a ton of opportunity and you can do a lot of different things with an accounting degree. The field is very dynamic and is always changing, so it keeps you on your toes. There is so much to learn and teamwork is key.
What other community organizations are you involved with, and why?
I am the treasurer for the MYP Advisory Council! I decided to get involved a few years ago, because I saw the passion these people had for Manchester. I am still blown away each and every meeting with how much time and care everyone puts into the organizations program of work.
What are some cool things in Manchester that excite you?
I love that Elm Street is getting some attention lately. New businesses seem to be popping up and that’s exciting for someone who works on Elm Street like myself. Pop of Color and the Bookery are a few of my favorite stops for a quick walk at lunch.
What do you think Manchester’s best kept secret is?
I hope they’re not a secret, but all the breweries! Pipe Dream and Great North Aleworks are a few of my personal favorites but there are many others to choose from.
